Lanthanum Hexaboride (LaB6)
Lanthanum Hexaboride (LaB6)
Lanthanum Boride, also called Lanthanum Hexaboride or LaB6, is an inorganic chemical, a boride of lanthanum, and a refractory ceramic material. It is stable in a vacuum; it has a high melting point of 2210 °C. It is insoluble in water and hydrochloric acid.
Properties of Lanthanum Hexaboride:
-High melting point of 2528 K
-Insoluble in water and hydrochloric acid
-High electron emissivity
-Stable in vacuum
-Stoichiometric samples are colored intense purple-violet, while boron-rich ones (above LaB6.07) are blue. Ion bombardment changes its color from purple to emerald green, LaB6 is a superconductor with a relatively low transition temperature of 0.45 K. LaB6 is considered a boron-rich material.
Boride Compound has a hard, high melting point material, has metal-like conductivity, and is stable to non-oxidizing acids, but will decompose in strong oxidants and strong bases. Borides are used in semiconductors, superconductors, diamagnetic, paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, turbine blades, and rocket nozzles.
Lanthanum Boride Applications
The main application of LaB6 is in hot cathodes, either as a single crystal or as a coating deposited by physical vapor deposition. Its applications include:
-Thermionic emission (cathode)
-Plasma source for plasma enhanced coating (PECVD)
-Vacuum electron beam welding machine
-Electron beam surface reforming device
-Electron beam lithography device
-Transmission electron microscope
-Scanning electron microscope
-Surface analysis device
-Radiotherapy devices
